Nociceptors

Description

Nociceptors are injury-sensitive Sensory Receptors located throughout the body that generate the Pain Sensation.

Nervous System

 Nociceptors convert mechanical, thermal or chemical stimulations that injure or threaten the body's tissues into Nerve Impulses that are precursors for the sensation of Pain and transmit these Nerve Impulses via the Peripheral Nervous System to the Spinal Cord for further transmission to higher centers within the Brain (where the conscious sensation of Pain occurs).

 A-delta Nociceptors generate a fast, bright and short Pain Sensation that is localized (Acute Pain).

 C Nociceptors slowly but persistently generate diffuse and particularly unpleasant Pain Sensation (Chronic Pain).
