Forms of Supplemental Melatonin

Controlled-Release Melatonin (also known as sustained-release Melatonin or timed-release Melatonin) is a form of supplemental Melatonin in which Melatonin is released gradually following its ingestion.  Controlled-Release Melatonin is superior to Fast-Release Melatonin for maintaining Sleep throughout the night.

Fast-Release Melatonin is superior to Controlled-Release Melatonin for initiating Sleep (i.e. it shortens Sleep latency).  The disadvantage of Fast-Release Melatonin is that it may be metabolized so quickly that (if taken at bedtime) most Melatonin may be out of blood circulation by 3 A.M.
