Description

The Waist-to-Hip Ratio is an alternative to Body Mass Index as a means of evaluating Obesity.  The Waist-to-Hip Ratio measures fat distribution.  Instead of measuring the quantity of fat carried (as measured by Body Mass Index), the Waist-to-Hip Ratio measures where body fat is stored.

Calculating the Waist-to-Hip Ratio

1.                  Measure the waist at its narrowest point.

2.                  Measure the hips at their widest point.

3.                  Divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement.

Women with a Waist-to-Hip Ratio greater than 0.8 may be regarded as obese.

Men with a Waist-to-Hip Ratio greater than 1.0 may be regarded as obese.
