Appendix
Description
The Appendix is a short (7 - 10 cm), thin, blind-ended tube attached to the end of the Cecum (pouch at the start of the Large Intestine).
Biological Function of the Appendix
Digestive System
The Appendix may help to prevent Crohn's Disease (persons who have had an appendectomy have an increased risk of Crohn’s Disease). [1]
The Appendix lubricates and stimulates the Large Intestine.
Immune System
The Appendix is comprised mainly of Lymphoid Tissue and is believed to participate in the Immune System (by initiating defense responses).
