Leprosy
Overview
Leprosy, also known as Hansen's Disease, is a chronic infectious bacterial disease that primarily affects the peripheral nerves, skin, upper respiratory tract, eyes, and nasal mucosa (lining of the nose) caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae.
Prevalence
Leprosy affects 10-15 million persons in the world - it occurs primarily in tropical regions of Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.
