Forms of Dwarfism
Achondroplasia (also known as Hypochondroplasia) involves a genetic defect in Cartilage cells at the ends of some Bones that do not multiply regardless of serum hGH levels. Persons afflicted with this ailment are known as dwarfs. They have a normal or large sized head, but disproportionately short long-bones.
Midgets is a term applied to those who are proportionate dwarfs, such as hGH deficient individuals (although few midgets are deficient in their production or release of hGH). This form of Dwarfism usually occurs as a result of absence of Receptors for hGH (therefore supplemental hGH has no therapeutic effect).
