Peroxisomes

Also known as:  Microbodies

Peroxisomes are single membrane-bound organelles, 0.2 - 1.0 mm in diameter, that are present in almost all Eukaryotes (a specific type of Cell).  They often have an electron-dense crystalline inclusion that contains Catalase, Urate Oxidase and other Enzymes relating to the formation and degradation of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Metabolism

 Peroxisomes detoxify various molecules.

 Peroxisomes catalyze the breakdown of Fatty Acids to Acetyl Coenzyme A.

 Zellwinger’s Syndrome patients may have an absence of Peroxisomes.
