Introduction

This section outlines the nutrients, compounds, environmental factors and ailments that impair the function or absorption of Vitamin C.

These Substances may Interfere with Vitamin C

Carbohydrates

Excessive consumption of Simple Sugars (e.g. Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose) may interfere with the transport of Vitamin C around the body - due to Simple Sugars sharing the same transport system within the body as Vitamin C.  [1]

Minerals & Elements

Cadmium may accelerate the depletion of Vitamin C.  [2]

Carbon Monoxide may accelerate the depletion of Vitamin C.  [3]

Copper may decrease the absorption of Vitamin C and stimulates the oxidation of Vitamin C to Hydrogen Peroxide.  [4]

Iron may decrease the absorption of Vitamin C (despite the fact that Vitamin C increases Iron absorption):  [5]

Iron may cause the oxidation of Vitamin C, resulting in the formation of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Lead may accelerate the depletion of Vitamin C.  [6]

Mercury may accelerate the depletion of Vitamin C.

Peptides

Topically-applied Copper-Peptide Complexes should not be used at the same time as topically-applied Vitamin C (as the Copper moiety of Copper-Peptide Complexes may inactivate Vitamin C in the Skin/Scalp).
