Vitamin A - Biochemical Testing of Vitamin A Status
Testing Vitamin A Nutritional Status [1]
The optimal (most accurate) method for testing Vitamin A status is the determination of Retinyl Esters, predominantly Retinyl Palmitate in the Liver. However this type of test is rarely administered as it involves an invasive procedure. Because of this limitation the most common means of testing for Vitamin A nutritional status is the quantification of Plasma Vitamin A levels.
Plasma Vitamin A
Plasma Vitamin A (in terms of either Retinol or Retinyl Palmitate) levels are the most commonly used measurement of Vitamin A status.
Usually, Plasma Retinol levels are homeostatically regulated by the Liver to meet the requirements of peripheral body tissues. As a result of this regulation, Plasma Retinol levels do not usually reflect recent dietary intake of Vitamin A.
