The Winter Squash is a type of Gourd Vegetable - the name Winter Squash can be confusing as Winter Squash are grown in warm weather just like other members of the Gourd family.

 Cucurbita pepo

 All species of Winter Squash belong to the Gourd (Cucurbitaceae) family.

Note that Winter Squashare grown from the same 4 species as Pumpkin - Pumpkin is differentiated from Winter Squash by its course, strongly flavored flesh, whereas the flesh of Winter Squash is usually fine-grained and far milder in flavor.
