Calcium - Bioavailability
Introduction
This section describes the factors involved in the absorption of dietary or supplemental Calcium.
Bioavailability [1]
Digestive System
Dietary Calcium must be made soluble in the Stomach and remain in a soluble state as it enters the Duodenum (the primary site of Calcium absorption) of the Small Intestine where it is then absorbed by chelating with a Calcium binding molecule in the cells of the Intestine's Membrane:
Further down the Small Intestine the environment becomes too alkaline to allow Calcium absorption.
