Calcium - Negative Aspects
Introduction
This section describes negative activities of Calcium, including other nutrients that Calcium can interfere with and the toxic effects of excessive Calcium.
Calcium may Interfere with these Substances
Minerals
Excessive Calcium may interfere with the absorption of:
Copper
Iron [1]
Magnesium [2]
Although it is noteworthy that the Calcium Gluconate form of supplemental Calcium may increase the absorption of dietary or supplemental Magnesium - this phenomenon occurs because of the Gluconic Acid component of Calcium Gluconate enhancing Magnesium bioavailability. [3]
Manganese [4]
Excessive Calcium (above the normal Calcium:Phosphorus ratio of 1:1 may cause the excretion of Phosphorus). [5]
Calcium may interfere with the absorption of Strontium as Calcium and Strontium compete with each other for absorption. Therefore persons using Strontium for therapeutic purposes should not consume Calcium supplements (or high-Calcium meals) at the same time as Strontium.
Excessive Calcium may deplete Zinc and may hinder the absorption of Zinc as Calcium competes with Zinc for absorption (people who use high dosages of Calcium supplements are therefore advised to increase their daily intake of Zinc). [6]
