Ceruloplasmin

Description

Ceruloplasmin is a Copper-containing endogenous Globulin.  It contains eight atoms of Copper per molecule.  It also functions directly as an Enzyme.

Minerals

 Ceruloplasmin is involved in the transport of Copper (70% to 80% of Plasma Copper is associated with Ceruloplasmin).

Metabolic Ailments

 Wilson’s Disease patients are totally absent in Ceruloplasmin.

Plasma Ceruloplasmin

 Plasma Ceruloplasmin levels are used as an alternative means of measuring Copper status.

 The standard laboratory reference range for Ceruloplasmin is 15 - 60 mg per deciliter (using immunoturbidimetric methodology).

 Ceruloplasmin levels are generally depressed during severe Copper deficiency.

 Plasma Ceruloplasmin levels may not reflect marginal Copper deficiency.

 One problem with Ceruloplasmin as an indicator of Copper status is that Ceruloplasmin is often elevated in postmenopausal women and Cancer patients, independent of the true Copper status of these sub-groups.
