Monoamine Oxidase Type A
Also known as: MAO-A
Description
Monoamine Oxidase Type A is one of the two forms of the Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) Enzyme - it is present both inside and outside of the Nervous System and is the more abundant form of MAO compared to the Type B form.
Biological Function of MAO-A
Detoxification
MAO-A catalyzes the oxidation of Tyramine in the Liver and other peripheral (i.e. outside of the Brain) areas of the body - this oxidation prevents the (toxic) "cheese-effect" that is associated with excessive accumulation of Tyramine.
